The current options
| Material | Source | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cactus leather | Nopal cactus + bio-polymer | Bags, jackets, shoes | Most commercially available. Soft, durable. |
| Mushroom (Mylo) | Mycelium roots | Bags, footwear | Closest to leather feel. Premium. |
| Apple leather | Apple waste from juice industry | Bags, shoes, watch straps | Vegan, low waste. |
| Pineapple (PiΓ±atex) | Pineapple leaf fibres | Shoes, bags, jackets | Pioneer plant leather. |
| Cork | Cork oak bark | Bags, wallets, footwear | Renewable, harvest doesn't kill the tree. |
| Recycled rubber | Old tyres | Shoes, sandals | Very durable. |
| PU (polyurethane) | Petroleum | Mass market | Plastic, but more durable and less polluting than PVC. |
| PVC | Petroleum | Cheap pleather | Phasing out β environmental issues. Avoid. |
| Washable kraft paper | Wood pulp | Tote bags | Surprisingly durable. |
Care notes
- Cactus / mushroom / apple leather: wipe with damp cloth. Don't soak. Most have a PU coating that protects.
- Cork: water-resistant. Wipes clean. Conditioner occasionally.
- PU: don't iron, don't expose to direct sun for years.
Where to actually buy in India
- Bags: Studio Beej (cork + cactus), Arture (cork), Stella McCartney (premium).
- Shoes: Paaduks (mixed), Veja (recycled), Wills Vegan, Will's London.
- Belts & wallets: Arture, Beej, Brown Living.
- Jackets: harder β Will's Vegan (imports), Stella, occasional H&M Conscious.
The honest sustainability ranking
If you care about both animals and the planet:
- Second-hand anything > new vegan leather > new conventional leather.
- Plant-based leathers with low PU content > PU > PVC.
- Repair what you own before replacing.
