Vegan Pet Food in India

Can dogs and cats be vegan? A careful, vet-anchored answer.

Dogs

A growing body of research โ€” including a 2022 University of Winchester study of 2,500+ dogs โ€” suggests that well-formulated vegan diets can support dogs as well as, and sometimes better than, conventional meat-based diets, on measures like coat condition, energy, and bowel health.

The key word is well-formulated. A dog needs:

  • Complete protein with all essential amino acids (especially taurine and L-carnitine โ€” often supplemented in vegan dog food)
  • Vitamin B12, D3, and certain B vitamins
  • Calcium-phosphorus balance
  • Omega-3 (algae-derived)

Brands in India: V-Dog (US import via specialty pet stores and Amazon), Wiggles plant-based, Benevo (occasional imports).

Cats

Cats are obligate carnivores โ€” biologically dependent on nutrients found primarily in animal tissue:

  • Taurine โ€” essential, cats don't synthesise it
  • Arachidonic acid โ€” fatty acid
  • Vitamin A (not just beta-carotene)
  • Vitamin B12

These can be added synthetically to plant-based cat food. The science is less settled than for dogs. The British Veterinary Association currently does not recommend vegan diets for cats.

If you're feeding a cat plant-based food, work with a vet, do regular bloodwork (especially taurine levels), and use only AAFCO-certified complete diets formulated for cats.

What to look for on a label

  • "Complete and balanced" or "meets AAFCO standards"
  • Lists added taurine, L-carnitine, B12, D3, omega-3 (algae)
  • For cats: explicitly labelled for cats (not for dogs)

The honest position

Many vegans struggle with this. The pragmatic stance is: do what's healthiest for the animal, who didn't choose to live with you. For dogs that means vegan food is a real option, under vet supervision. For cats, the ethics are genuinely more complicated.

What you can always do: adopt instead of buying, support shelters, and don't fund breeders.
